Winters can be harsh to your skin. The blustery cold conditions can leave your skin dry, itchy, irritated and raw. If you are keeping the inside atmosphere warm then heat may exterminate moisture from your body and from air as well.

What is deep cleansing?

Deep cleansing is one of the way to keep your skin healthy & stiff. Here are some tips specially to keep skin moisturized & body hydrated in winters:
1. Shower time & hot water temperature
It feels so good taking hot shower in cold chilly day. It is tempting & cozy but as suggested- your skin should be exposed to hot steamy water for 5-10 minutes maximum. It does not limit to body but hands as well. It certainly helps avoiding your skin turning red and irritant in hot water. In fact- it is advised to damp your hands in public restrooms instead of air hand dryer.
2. Ditch Heaters – invest in a humidifier
It is factual to learn that room heaters does consume oxygen from the internal atmosphere as well as from your skin. It is advisable to use humidifier in the room you spend most of the time in to keep your skin hydrated.
3. Go for gentle & fragrance free – organic cleansers
The regular fancy soap may have irritant chemical, fragrance and ingredients. Instead- it is suggested to use soaps/cleansers which are made of natural ingredients- free from chemicals. If you have noticed- such products labeled as fragrance free/unscented. Because regular soap/cleansers can worsen dry & itchy skin. So basically if you continue using it- limit to necessary body areas only like hands, feet, armpits etc.
4. Change your facial regime – according to winters
Winter skin needs thick moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated. A good facial regime including rose water, scrub, gels are advised to follow in winters. Choose cream based cleansers, lotions, moisturizers/creams. Toners & stringent should be sparingly applied as they contain alcohol which can lead to dryness. Invest in products which has natural oils. Nourish your face with rich cream.
While caring for face- we tend to forget the care of lips. Applying a moisturizing balm or petroleum jelly can help heal dry, cracked lips and keep them safe from getting chapped.
5. Keep your skin moisturized- specially hands
An average person wash the hands 4-5 times a day. Again using hand wash made with natural ingredients plays vital role in keeping hands soft & crack free. In winters, we cover ourselves with warm clothes from head to toe. It is recommended to wear gloves while you going out & waterproof gloves when washing dishes or cleaning around the house. Application of a hand cream/any thick moisturizer after each washing can help retaining soft hands.
6. Sunscreen Sunscreen Sunscreen
I always say whether it is cloudy day or sunny day; sunscreen is must to wear every day. We should not get misled by darker cloudy days in winter. It is as important to be applying sunscreen in the winter as it is in the summer because harmful UV rays still exist whether there is no sun hence these rays can still cause damage. So before you go out, apply a moisturizing sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15 or higher to all exposed areas of your body.
7. Cover your skin appropriately
Wearing layers of fabric is not what winters meant for. Instead go for light layers made from soft breathable fabric directly against your skin then pull on heavy & warm sweaters. As mentioned earlier- protect your hands from cold breeze with gloves that won’t irritate the skin. In crux wear cotton/silk layer touching the direct skin then wear woolens as winter fabrics can cause dryness & itchiness.
8. Eat healthy & stay hydrated
Yes- we have mentioned about keeping the skin moisturized from outside. However your diet plays important role to keep your skin healthy & hydrated. Winters mean good food days... one can indulge oneself by foods /supplements that contain omega-3 & 6 fatty acids like flax seeds, fish, mutton, leafy vegetables, milk products etc. it keeps the energy level intact & maintain the body hydrated.

However If you still feel dryness, discomfort, and irritation after trying these healthy skin tips or If you don't see improvement in a few days, talk with your doctor-You may need a prescribed medicated moisturizer to overcome winter's drying effects on your skin.
